It was a lights-out performance by Waunakee starting pitcher Derek Lyght. The Waunakee righty held Portage to just three hits and struck out eight to lead his team to an 8-2 victory over Portage in an American Legion Baseball game at a wet and cool Bidwell Field on Tuesday evening.

Burns pitches Brewers past Santana, Mets

MILWAUKEE - Ryan Braun hit a three-run double and scored on Johan Santana's throwing error, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-3 victory over the Mets on Tuesday night that extended New York's losing streak to a season-high five games.

LEGION BASEBALL: Columbus sweeps Pardeeville

The Pardeeville American Legion Baseball squad came out swinging in its doubleheader with Columbus on Sunday afternoon, but was unable to manufacture much offense, falling 7-0 in the opener and then dropping the nightcap, 9-2.

Portage alum Mommens a scholar athlete

Former Portage High School athlete David Mommens was recently named a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics scholar athlete at Concordia University in Nebraska. Mommens was one of 74 athletes from the school, located in Seward, Neb., to earn the honor.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Portage Furniture wins Major League title

Despite falling behind 2-0 in the opening inning, The Portage Furniture team became the Major League Champions of the Portage Little League Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Penda scored twice in the top of the opening inning, but Portage Furniture had a pair of five-run innings later in the contest en route to a 11-2 victory at the Bruce Smith Little League Complex.

The Portage Junior Legion team may have went 1-3 at the Baraboo Tournament over the weekend, but the local squad was close to going a perfect 4-0 in the Circus City, as Portage's three losses came by a combined four runs.

The Portage Junior Legion Baseball team got some strong pitching, but some less-than-stellar defense proved to be costly, as it lost a pair of games on Sunday at Baraboo's Mary Rountree Field. Portage opened the day playing South St. Paul, from St. Paul, Minn., and lost 7-3. In the nightcap, Portage dropped a 7-5 decision to the host Baraboo Bandits.
