MARKESAN - Larry Bylsma said a spectator came up to him Thursday night and told him no one knew what they just saw.
Markesan's fans surely saw it. Cambria-Friesland's 33-32 Central Trailways girls basketball stunner is still going to defy belief for Hornet fans.
With an 8-0 run in the final 1 minute, 34 seconds, the Toppers (3-1, 1-1 Central) snapped Markesan's 43-game league winning streak. It came two nights after Markesan narrowly lost to fellow Division 3 state qualifier Amherst.
"This is a big win for these kids," said Bylsma, new to the helm at C-F. "If we do things right, decent things are going to happen to these kids.
"The kids hung around and did what they had to do."
Brittany Bylsma had eight of her 15 points in the fourth quarter. She hit a short jumper with 4.1 seconds left to give the Toppers their first lead since late in the first quarter.
Markesan didn't hit a field goal in the final 12 minutes. The Hornets had six of their 16 turnovers in the final quarter, missed two bonus free throws and whiffed on an open bunny.
"In three nights we go from some of the best ball in the state to some of the worst ball we can play," Laper said. "I'm not taking anything away from Cambria because they played great."
Wiersma had five of her seven points in the fourth quarter along with a team-high eight rebounds.
"For us to hold a team like Markesan to 32 points is amazing," Larry Bylsma said. "The kids did their assignments and Brittany had that look in her eye where she wasn't going to be denied."
