A sacrifice fly by Kyle Bender scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as McFarland nipped Rio 3-2 in a Home Talent League game on Sunday afternoon in McFarland.
Bender's winning sacrifice fly came one-half inning after Rio's Jon Bortz tied the game with a two-out RBI single. It was Bortz's second RBI of the game, as his solo home run into a stiff wind with two outs in the first inning gave Rio a 1-0 lead.
That lead stood up until the fifth inning when McFarland tied it with a run and then took a 2-1 lead with a RBI single by Cale Schmelzer in the sixth.
Kevin Wopat went the distance on the mound and took the loss for Rio. McFarland starter Corey Schuchardt also went the distance and got the win by holding the Railmen to two runs on seven hits, while striking out four.
With the loss, Rio falls to 1-10 in the Eastern Section of the Sunday Home Talent Baseball League. McFarland moves to 7-4.
Rio will next play on Saturday at home against Sun Prairie. The Railmen will also play host to Marshall on Sunday, July 5. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
