  3. article: BREWERS: Bullpen is key to Milwaukee's success

With the recent addition of CC Sabathia, the expected return Tuesday of Jeff Suppan and the home-road, tag-team starting arrangement of Dave Bush and Seth McClung, the Milwaukee Brewers' rotation appears set for the second half of the season that starts tonight in San Francisco.
While more production from leadoff hitter Rickie Weeks and seventh hitter Mike Cameron would be welcomed, the Brewers have been the most productive offense in the National League over the past 30 days with 132 runs and 41 home runs.
And while the defense isn't packed with Gold Glove possibilities beyond catcher Jason Kendall and Cameron in center field, it is better than it has been in any of manager Ned Yost's six seasons.
So what do the Brewers need to do to make sure they play a significant role in the playoff chase?
    How about a little relief?
"If you look at the big picture stuff, you're managing all the way through September trying to make sure your bullpen stays strong," Yost said just before the All-Star break. "That revolves around getting the job done, coming in, throwing strikes and executing."
Yost and general manager Doug Melvin made relief pitching a priority this season after a bullpen meltdown last August contributed to the Brewers falling two games short of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.
Melvin orchestrated a major overhaul, bringing in Salomon Torres, Eric Gagne, Guillermo Mota and David Riske to anchor the back end of the pen.
Yost, meanwhile, worked out a plan to limit his relievers to no more than three straight appearances before a mandatory day off. Yost's plan appears to be working. The Brewers' bullpen has thrown 279.2 innings this season, the second-lowest total in the NL behind Arizona, whose strong starting staff has limited the Diamondbacks' bullpen to 272 innings.
Only Torres, who has made 11 multiple-inning appearances (including three since taking over as the closer May 20), ranks among the top relievers in innings pitched with 49.1.
