article: MAILBAG: Sentence doesn’t fit crime in hit-and-run fatality
After reading the recent article, I am strongly questioning the judgement of Marquette County Judge Richard Wright in the case of the hit-and-run death of Timothy James Bennett.

article: MAILBAG: Little League tourney over weekend a success
Over this past weekend, the Portage Little League hosted a nondistrict tournament for 9- and 10-year-olds and 11- and 12-year-olds. It was a great success all around with all teams wanting to return next year.
The cities that played in the tournament were Portage, Pardeeville, Stoughton, Beaver Dam, Madison West, Reedsburg, Windsor, Mauston and Montello. We would like to thank the Portage Park and Rec. department, the Touchdown Club and the Portage Tourism Board for their great help in making this a success.
We would also like to thank the following restaurants for sponsoring these teams: A&W, Bud's Pizza, Culver's, Dino's, Gramma's Cafe, Hitching Post, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Portage Family Restaurant, RJ's Place and the Tamarack. A special thanks to all the families who helped out this weekend ... from running the concession stands, to keeping the fields maintained in between games and so on. They've all made it possible.

article: MAILBAG: Marcellon controversy could have been avoided
I couldn't help but note, and realize the consequences to come, on the articles to the Mailbag regarding the Marcellon pit events. It was too bad that not one person involved, pro or con, realized that this was out of their hands from day one. To divide a community over something they have absolutely no control over is a shame.
This decision was to be made by the Columbia County Planning and Zoning Committee. If just one person would have picked up on this, all the acrimony, friendship divides and the foolish recall (which ended up with justified results) would have been negated.
Even if township recommendations are noted over issues, they come in fourth when county boards vote for or against any proposals. The other three: 1) How does it affect the votes for them in the next election. 2) Does vote help in any way them, a relative, friend, friend of a friend or close associate. 3) Does the project benefit or be required for the good of the majority of citizens as against the detriment of a few. Just joking on No. 1 and 2?
Shake hands and get over it, folks. The sun still rises and sets over this property. Your great-grandchildren will someday notify you of the pit results, up there or down below.

article: MAILBAG: What a great ride it was, boys
There were seven senior baseball players who played their last game a few months ago. Many of us who have followed baseball had been treated to a wonderful experience with these kids. All are great kids, with most on the honor roll, and they are outstanding role models for younger kids, all headed to college and a bright future.

article: MAILBAG: Many people helped when ARC home flooded
It's an amazing feeling to know what a supportive community we are a part of. Due to the devastation caused by the recent flooding to the Pardeeville area, four of our clients were evacuated from their home and still remain in temporary housing. They are all doing tremendously well.

article: MAILBAG: Freye did good job as Marcellon clerk
I wanted to thank Anne Freye for her honesty and consciousness while holding office as the town clerk of Marcellon Township. She kept the public informed throughout her time in office, despite much effort on the part of others to keep her from doing so.
