It was a glorious day on the top of Gibraltar Rock a couple of weeks ago. More than 100 folks who were able to return to that favorite spot on May 30 enjoyed the opportunity to revisit the incredible view and remember days past when friends and families made regular trips there. Many funny and poignant Gibraltar Rock stories were shared throughout the day.
There were a number of people who helped to make that day possible. The Gibraltar Rock Team of the Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley, the town of West Point, and the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Columbia County would like to thank the following people and organizations for their assistance and support:
Lodi Methodist Church for the use of their new bus and the time of drivers Andy Hank and Jim Schmiedlin; Jeanette Cutsforth and First Student for the use of their bus and driver Ken Glienke; the kitchen crew of Judy Ambrose and Linda Wiedenfeld with Joan Ryan, Patti Schukneckt, Louis Enge, Marcia Schwarz, and Edie and Tom Eberle; the on-the-rock volunteers, Karna Hanna, Patti Herman, Ed and Diane Godec, Jody Thistle, Paulette Smith, Kurt Eakle, Allison Seaton, Rachel Higgins and Rog Severson; Dave Mickelson, emeritus University of Wisconsin geology professor, who gave two interesting talks on the geology of the rock; and Jody Beers and Glenna Barrett for donating desserts.
The efforts of these people remind us that we should never underestimate the ability of a small group of committed people to do great things.
We have been asked a number of times if we will repeat this special event, and we hope to be able to do so, perhaps sometime early in the fall when the trees have turned color.
On behalf of Dean Schwarz of the town of West Point and Christine See of the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Columbia County, thanks again to everyone who made the day so special and memorable.
