Last Friday night, I attended my last Portage High School graduation ceremony as a parent. As I sat waiting for "Pomp and Circumstance," I reminisced about sporting events, proms, plays, concerts, banquets, parent-teacher conferences and award ceremonies.
Prior to the distribution of diplomas, several high school staff members lined up on both sides of the stage. As the seniors approached and departed the stage, they were congratulated warmly by those waiting to greet them. Most of the students reached out and received hugs from office staff, teachers, counselors and coaches. What an awesome environment for our kids.
I'd like to take this opportunity to praise the staff of Portage High School. Thank you for caring. Thanks for the unbiased advice, extra hours of tutoring, and the encouragement to try something new. Thank you for holding our kids accountable for their decisions and actions. Thanks for nurturing their interests, providing opportunities for success, and supporting them after defeat. Thanks for teaching them responsibility and the importance of volunteering. Thank you for developing leadership through your example.
My experiences as a high school parent are over, but I'm forever thankful for the memories. Congratulations Ms. Karin Exo and staff. Well done.
