After reading about the several cases being reported on cemetery vandalism, I thought I would also share the misfortune our family has felt in the past two years.
It seems as if the Marcellon Cemetery is taking an unfortunate hit in that regard. Last year before Memorial Day, a large custom-designed headstone saddle that was placed on my grandparents' grave disappeared within a week. This year, as if our family had not suffered enough loss losing my dad, aunt and uncle within seven months, all of the floral arrangements, nine total, disappeared shortly after the Memorial Day weekend.
Imagine the disbelief seeing three new, side-by-side graves stripped of the floral arrangements placed by their loving families. Especially disheartening was the fact that my uncle, a World War II veteran, had his patriotic red, white and blue bouquets stolen.
I personally cannot fathom how anyone can justify stealing from the dead. Obviously they have no conscious.
We were beginning to think someone had ill feelings against our family, but after reading Grace Barden's letter in last week's paper we realized we have merely fallen victim to vandals. Our only hope is that someday they will have to answer for their misdeeds here on Earth because we know the likelihood of their being caught is slim.
