In the Mailbag section of the June 22 online edition of the Daily Register, Daniel G. Garrigan offered the Columbia County Board of Supervisors the suggestion of having the county purchase the Clough building for $1 and then renovate and convert it to fill the needs for the expansion of county offices.
I see this proposal as a golden opportunity for the county to meet the needs for more office space, save a building of historical significance (treasured, admittedly, not by all but nevertheless by many of those that attended classes there) and apparently save a considerable amount of money.
Will the Board of Supervisors seriously study this proposal or for that matter even listen to it?
If they do not, I would place the blame on what, over the years, I have observed as a general attitude of many in the region to be "old is bad, new is good, let's tear it down and build something spanking new regardless of the cost."
I sincerely hope that this observation of mine is proven to be faulty and that the county ends up with filling its needs for added office space by saving the Clough building in the process.
Thank you, Daniel, and good luck.
