PORTAGE - Alice L. Angell, 75, of Portage, passed away peacefully after a sudden illness Saturday, June 20, 2009, at University Hospital in Madison, surrounded by family and friends.
Alice was born Sept. 13, 1933, in Kensett, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Anna Nielsen Espevold. She was married on May 2, 1953, to Claude "Pete" Angell, husband of 43 years. Alice retired from Rayovac on March 1, 1996, after 27 years of employment. She was a voracious reader, crossword puzzle solver, and was an avid fan of the Packers, Brewers and Badgers. Alice enjoyed hosting family holiday gatherings, tavern socializing, league bowling with her Rayovac cohorts, shooting pool, playing horseshoes and country music. She had traveled to see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Fenway Park to see the Red Sox and the Green Monster. Alice was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she loved all babies and children.
She is survived by her children, Diane (Ronald) Woodard, Portage, Vickie (Kevin) Rice, Manchester, CT, Susan (Michael) Lake, Sun Prairie, David Angell, Portage, and Ann (Mark) Schoen, Madison; her grandchildren, Ron, Dan, David and Steven Woodard, Portage, Megan (Michael) Oliver, West Salem, Ethan Rice, Manchester, CT, Nicole (Johannes) Hanson, Onalaska, Tessa and Margery Lake, Sun Prairie, Amanda Angell, Portage, Tia, Benjamin and Jessica Schoen, Madison; her great-grandson, Drew Oliver, West Salem; her sister, Dolly (Clive) Wyke, Britt, Iowa; her brother-in-law, Bob (Mary) Angell, Bloomington, Minn.; her sister-in-law, Melva Graf, Bloomington, Minn.; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Claude "Pete", and her brother, Harley Espevold.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. Tom Countryman officiating. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
