Lyman D. Newell

PORTAGE - Lyman D. Newell, 91, of Portage, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Heritage House in Portage.

Lyman was born March 11, 1918, in Benton Township, Lake County, Ill., son of Frank and Margaret McGuire Newell. He graduated from Ingram Union Free High School, Wisconsin, on May 22, 1935. On June 19, 1941, Lyman was united in marriage with Inez Fonk; together they raised their family in Illinois. Following the sale of their family grocery business in Libertyville, Ill., they moved to their home on Swan Lake, where they enjoyed many years of retirement. Lyman was an avid golfer, enjoyed years as a volunteer for ARC of Columbia County, and also as an AARP volunteer tax aide.

He is survived by four children, Linda (Michael) Goheen of Aiken, S.C., Milton Newell Sr. of Florida, Raymond (Marsha) Newell of Wheaton, Ill., and Teresa (Jim) Miller of Portage; 12 grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) McCarthy of Charlotte, N.C., Martin (Dana) Goheen of Glen Elyn, Ill., David Goheen of Lombard, Ill., Kevin Goheen of Charlotte, N.C., Milton Newell Jr. of Pardeeville, Laura (Chris) Newell-Herrington of rural Pardeeville, Katherine Newell of Warrenville, Ill., Andrea Newell of Aurora, Ill., Matthew (Margarita) Newell of North Aurora, Ill., Brian (Janelle) Donohue of Endeavor, Brenda (Guy) Austin of Hollandale, and Diane (Kory) Kalscheur of Pine Bluff; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Gertrude "Trude" Doughten of Florida; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Inez, June 6, 2000; and sisters, Frances Newell, Doris Kennedy Hanks, Marion Wetzel, Margaret O'Connor and Una Newell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kenosha. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kenosha. The family requests flowers not be sent. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
