Forrest "Bud" Ashley

PORTAGE - Forrest "Bud" Ashley, 100, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Remington House in Pardeeville.

He was born Nov. 1, 1908, in rural Baraboo to Russell and Jennie Baxter Ashley. On June 3, 1939, he was united in marriage to Marion Simonds in Baraboo; she preceded him in death Jan. 3, 2001.

Bud worked for 44 years at Weyenberg Shoe Factory and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific. He and his wife, Marian, owned and operated the Saddle Inn Tavern until his retirement. He was a member of the Portage VFW, past member of the Tavern League of Columbia County, past member of the Elks Club of Portage and a member of Portage United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Terry (Judy) Ashley of Portage; three grandchildren, Terry Jr., Tom and Linda; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Marvel Rampanelle of Portage; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank, George, Charles and James; and sisters, Dorothy, Doris, Ruth, Aileen, Phyllis and Leona.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Picha Funeral Home, Portage with Rev. Tom Countryman officiating. Inurnment with military services will be held at the Silver Lake Cemetery, Portage. Friends may call at Picha Funeral Home, Portage, on Thursday from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
