A woman who was reported missing Tuesday was found dead Wednesday in her car, which was submerged in the Baraboo River less than five miles from her home, authorities say.
The man who lives with the woman told authorities she left home Tuesday morning to go shopping in Baraboo, but never returned. The man found tire skids along county Highway U, just north of state Highway 33 east of Baraboo, said Sauk County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Chip Meister.
The man drove to St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo to see if the woman was a patient, hoping an accident at the scene had already been dealt with, Meister said.
Meister said the man then notified the sheriff's department, which had not heard of a crash in the area.
Skid marks indicated the woman drove off the road and over-corrected, directing her Volkswagen across the road, through a patch of woods and into the river, Meister said.
"The vehicle parts we found here matched the description of the vehicle he said she was driving," Meister said.
Sheriff's department divers found the woman partially inside the vehicle under the water, he said.
Authorities used a rotating wrecker on a tow truck to remove the car from the river. The name of the victim was not available Wednesday evening.
Sauk County Coroner Betty A. Hinze said Wednesday night that she expects to have the victim's name today.
"She's from Ukraine, and there was no identification on the body," Hinze said. "She was staying in the area and working in the area."
