Grapefruits and oranges aren't in season, but they are if you buy them from Portage High School students this month.

Profit from the sales go mostly to the Music Boosters which support the Portage School District Music Department. The local organization assists musically-inclined students in various ways, said Tom Shaver, Portage High School band director.

"The Music Boosters give $10,000 in scholarships each year to band and choir students to attend summer music camps. They also help purchase big-ticket items for the band and choir such as uniforms, choral robes, swing choir costumes and instrument storage facilities. (And) they also help provide music experiences for children who cannot afford to buy an instrument or pay for a music experience trip," Shaver said.

The organization assisted the marching band purchase of new uniforms this April, said Mary Jo Page, a member of the Music Boosters.

"Tom's done a great job building the band, and the kids love him," Page said.

With forms in hand, choir/band students will take fruit orders from Nov. 4 until Nov. 16. Items for purchase include gift boxes, a variety of apples, pears, beef sticks, and clementine oranges.

In addition to the profit that the Music Boosters receive, band and choir students are also given a slice of the profit. Money will be used for trips, such as the band traveling to Florida for spring break 2010.

"The band members will give performances in Disney World and Universal Studios," Shaver said. "The cost for 120 band members and chaperones to make this trip will cost approximately $96,000. Band students and parents have paid one-third of the cost to this point. We have the other two-thirds to work on now."

Packages can be picked up in time for the holiday season at the Portage Armory on Friday, Dec. 11, until 6 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 12, until noon, Page said.
