CAMBRIA - Cambria Community Day organizers had a curve ball thrown at them over their plans for a trip to Miller Park in June.
The Cambria-Friesland Historical Society, Cambria Kiwanis and Cambria Youth Center are sponsoring Cambria Community Day, a chance to take kids out to the ballpark.
The trip was planned for June 23, when Miller Park will unveil a memorial plaque honoring Davy Jones, a Cambria native who played professional baseball. That game sold out, so a new date was chosen - June 29, vs. the New York Mets.
"These are not problems, these are challenges," said Jay Williams, president of the Cambria-Friesland Historical Society.
The gates open at 6:05 p.m., and at least one bus will leave Cambria at about 4:30 p.m. The Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the cost of one bus. Williams said that seats will be purchased in the family section, where no alcohol is served. Those interested can take pictures of the Jones memorial before the game.
"We want to make it about the kids," Williams said.
The Cambria Fire Department and Lake Improvement Committee have made donations toward the event, and two spaghetti suppers and a car wash are being planned.
The spaghetti suppers will be held on April 17 and 18 at Cambria-Friesland High School before performances of the school play. Donations for the suppers are being sought. The car wash is planned for April 25, the same day the Kiwanis Club sponsors a Park Clean Up Day.
There will be sign-up sheets for those interested in taking part in the trip at the school, library, village office and area businesses.
T-shirts may be ordered for $15. The cost to attend will be $15 per adult and $2 for children 17 and younger. That cost includes the bus trip, ticket into the game and a sandwich dinner.
The actual cost is about $30, but Williams said they hope to raise enough money through donations and fundraisers to cover the cost of all children who wish to attend. The deadline to sign up is May 8.
