TOWN OF WESTFORD - A Shorewood family spending the holiday weekend at their vacation home near the north end of Beaver Dam Lake discovered a fire in their garage Friday that severely damaged their home.
The home at W11254 Lake Road in the town of Westford is owned by Michael Aita.
According to Fox Lake Fire Chief Bill Frank, the family heard a popping noise in the garage and opened the door to the attached garage to discover it engulfed in flames.
They called 911 at 3:21 p.m. and evacuated the house.
The fire spread into the house and Frank said damage also included two vehicles, one which was parked in the garage and another that was parked nearby.
One firefighter was briefly treated at the scene for exhaustion.
Firefighters also administered oxygen to a cat and Frank said the cat and another owned by the family survived the blaze.
Frank said the cause of the fire was not known Friday night.
Beaver Dam and Randolph Fire Departments provided mutual aid. The Fox Lake Fire Department remained on the scene until 6 p.m.
