Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 3:27 p.m. Wednesday east of Portage at the intersection of Highway 16/51 and Hillcrest Road. A white Chevrolet Venture minivan with a woman and two children inside, right, on flatbed trailer, was traveling south when it rear-ended a red Chevrolet pickup truck as the truck slowed to turn left onto Hillcrest Road, knocking the truck onto its passenger side, Columbia County Sheriff Dennis Richards said. A preschool-age boy received facial injuries and was transported to Divine Savior Healthcare via ambulance. The truck driver, identified by Portage Police Chief Ken Manthey as George Herold, 69, was also transported to Divine Savior Healthcare with a head injury. He was returning home after serving as a crossing guard at MacFarlane Road and Franklin Street, Manthey said. The sheriff’s department was investigating the incident Wednesday.
