Oxford Elementary School reopened Monday after two closures for H1N1 flu in the last two weeks.
Absentee rates were at 30 percent for staff and students during the time of the closures, but dropped to only six total student absences Monday, said Roger Schmidt, Westfield School District administrator.
"As far as we're concerned, everything is back to normal," he said.
The Marquette County Health Department and Westfield School District decided Oct. 21 to close the school Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 to reduce the spread of H1N1. Classes were to resume Oct. 26, but students were sent home at noon that day and remained off until Monday. Teacher conferences Oct. 29 and 30 gave students additional time off.
One hundred fifteen students, from kindergarten to sixth grade, attend Oxford Elementary.
Schmidt said he does not know of any parents upset about the cancellations.
"There were no concerns of giving the kids time to go home and recover," Schmidt said.
However, the district will continue to be vigilant and monitor the absentee levels of each school building, Schmidt said.
Flu prevention
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
• Stay away from people who are sick.
• Cover your nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, the pathway for viruses.
• Eat nutritious meals and get plenty of rest.
