Fire calls for Nov. 21, 2009

The Portage Fire Department has responded to a total of 331 calls since Jan. 1.

N7800 block of Highway EE: At 3:34 p.m. Nov. 10, firefighters responding to a grass fire discovered about a fifth of an acre and a round bale of hay burning. About 100 gallons of water were used to put out the fire, and the bale was pulled apart and the fire extinguished. Nine firefighters responded with Brush 1, Engine 8 and Tanker 5; three remained on standby at the station until 4:38 p.m.

Highway CM at Highway CX: Firefighters at 12:57 p.m. Nov. 11 responded to a report of a cornfield on fire. Eight firefighters with Brush 1, Engine 8 and Tanker 5 used 10 gallons of water to extinguish a fire; an area of 30 feet by 40 feet was burned. The fire might have been started when a corn picker struck a rock and caused a spark. One firefighter remained on standby at the station until 1:58 p.m.

N6800 block of Highway 51: At 5:34 p.m. Nov. 11, firefighters responded to a two-vehicle crash. They disconnected the battery in one of the vehicles and cleaning up spilled fluid. Nine firefighters on Engine 6 and Rescue 9 responded to the scene while five remained on standby at the station until 6:44 p.m.

100 block of East Pleasant Street: At 6:08 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a grass fire. The fire was out when two firefighters responded; they watered down a 3-foot-by-5-foot area with 5 gallons of water. The call was completed at 6:15 p.m.

N5500 block of Star Branch Road: Firefighters at 6:12 p.m. Nov. 13 responded to an activated fire alarm, which later was reported to be a false alarm. Eight firefighters responded in Engine 6 and Tanker 4; the call was completed at 6:45 p.m.

W7300 block of Highway 16: Firefighters at 12:37 p.m. Nov. 14 responded to a grass fire. The fire was extinguished when firefighters arrived; a 10-foot-by-15 foot area was burned; firefighters soaked the area with 5 gallons of water. A possible cause of the fire was a squirrel on nearby power lines. Six firefighters responded until the call was completed at 1:15 p.m.

West Edgewater Street: At 9:32 a.m. Monday, five firefighters on Engine 6 responded to a two-vehicle crash. Firefighters cleaned up spilled fluids and completed the call at 9:51 a.m.

W8200 block of Highway P: At 12:41 p.m. Monday, firefighters responded to a vehicle hitting a deer. No fluids leaked from the vehicle. Eight firefighters responded on Engine 6 and Rescue 9 as two remained on standby at the station until 1:31 p.m.

1600 block of New Pinery Road: Firefighters at 8:59 a.m. Tuesday responded to an activated carbon monoxide detector. Firefighters monitored the air inside the building and determined that the air was fine. Five firefighters responded; the call was completed at 9:17 a.m.
