Portage grew ever so slightly from 2007 to 2008, according to the latest census data from the federal government.
Fifty-five more people live in the city, the numbers show. The city grew by 2 percent from 2000 to 2008, from 9,720 to 9,919.
Milwaukee held onto its spot as the nation's 23rd largest city. It gained about 7,500 residents between 2000 and 2008, raising the total to just more than 604,000 for an increase of about 1.3 percent.
The city gained 0.3 percent from 2007 to 2008.
Wisconsin had 5.6 million people in 2008, an increase of 0.5 percent from the previous year and growth of 4.9 percent since 2000.
City figures showed Madison had one of the state's highest growth rates, adding about 22,500 residents or 10.7 percent between 2000 and 2008, including 1.4 percent growth from 2007 to 2008.
