Police are seeking further information regarding a Portage man under suspicion of sexually assaulting at least one child.

Warren J. Henkelman, 42, of Portage, was arrested Tuesday after authorities with the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation executed a search warrant on his Henry Drive apartment, according to Portage police.

Following the search, prompted by evidence that Henkelman was in possession of child pornography, Henkelman is being held on tentative charges of first-degree sexual assault of a child younger than 12, physical abuse of a child and possession of child pornography.

Authorities are investigating the possibility that Henkelman might have sexually assaulted more than one child.

"We are still interviewing other children," said Detective Lt. Mark Hahn of the Portage Police Department. "There's always a concern of other victims out there."

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections Sex Offender Registry Web site lists a Warren J. Henkelman as a lifetime registrant in compliance who was convicted in June 2004 of third-degree rape in the state of Oregon.

Hahn urged anyone with any information regarding Henkelman to contact the Portage Police Department at 742-2171.

Henkelman remains in the Columbia County Jail pending an appearance on charges, possibly today.
