Dustin Krey, left, and teammate Kevin Hurd, right, come off the field after Krey booted an extra point during a game this fall. Krey and Hurd led Portage’s all-conference honorees, as both were second-team selections in the Badger North. Krey was a second teamer at kicker, while Hurd was second team at receiver.

Kevin Hurd and Dustin Krey were two-way picks to highlight five Portage players honored when the Northern Badger released its all-conference teams.

Tim Condon, Harrison Cummings, Jon Nolan, John Regalia, Travis Hamilton and Mason Kuhn also were recognized by the conference.

Hurd was named second team receiver and honorable mention defensive back this season for the Warriors. The senior captain led the Badger North with 37 catches for 412 yards and had five touchdowns with one two-point conversion. Hurd was a second-team all-conference pick at receiver last year.

"Kevin was an extension of the coaching staff out there, he's just so smart," Portage coach Dave Schmitz said.

"He just knew how to position his body and knew how to work the defensive back. He's just so smart, so savvy. He knows the game."

Hurd also was tabbed honorable mention defensive back, where he had 32 total tackles and one pass-breakup.

Krey was named second-team all-conference placekicker and honorable mention at punter. He was 3-for-5 on field goal attempts this year with a long of 28 yards and went 6-of-9 on point after tries. He had 24 kick-offs for 1,164, a 48.5-yard average. He added 31 punts for 961 yards - an average of 31 yards per punt - with a long of 52 yards.

"He came in kind of raw a few years ago, but if there's one kid who was totally committed basically throughout the year, it was Dustin Krey," Schmitz said. "He was the hardest weight room worker we had.

"He worked at his kicking game every day and continued to get better."

Two members of the Warriors offensive line were named honorable mention with guard Tim Condon and center Harrison Cummings.

Condon, a junior, played both guard and tackle during the season.

"He's just a smart, high-character-type kid that you can always rely on," Schmitz said of Condon. "His reliability and his consistency is what we needed."

Cummings was a senior co-captain on the team, along with Hurd.

"He was the leader of the line. Very outspoken, got the guys fired up and ready to go each game," Schmitz said of Cummings. "I'm sure he would say the same thing: he's not the most gifted athlete but he gives great effort every single snap."

Nolan, who started at corner for the Warriors last season, was named honorable mention after he led the team with 80 rushes for 419 yards, an average of 5.2 yards per carry. He scored five touchdowns, had one two-point conversion and added one punt return for a score.

"We asked a lot of him this year," said Schmitz, adding that Nolan played slotback and not a true tailback position, which make his numbers more impressive. "I think he took a step forward this year. He's got good speed. He's talented. He's got a lot of good natural ability."

On defense, Regalia, Hamilton and Kuhn garnered honorable mention accolades.

Regalia, a senior, earned the recognition at defensive end. He recorded 28 total tackles, including two tackles-for-loss and two quarterback hurries to go along with one fumble recovery.

"His improvement from a year ago was huge for us," Schmitz said. "Probably our best defender up front, our most consistent. He did a good job of carrying out his responsibilities, whether he made the tackle or not, he allowed other guys to do their jobs."

Hamilton, a sophomore, played outside and inside linebacker for Portage in 2009. He led the team with 71 defensive points, including 44 total tackles, three for loss, three fumble recoveries and one pass breakup.

"You could really see his improvement from game-to-game. He's a quick learner," Schmitz said. "A kid that really has a high football IQ, so it really didn't take long for him to catch on. He just got better and better."

Kuhn, a junior, played outside linebacker for the Warriors. He had the second-most defensive points behind Hamilton, recording 36 total tackles, five for loss, one sack and fumble recovery.

"He has a big upside. He's got some athletic ability and toughness," Schmitz said. "He's very coachable. Really the sky is the limit for him."

The Warriors went 1-8 this season and finished sixth in the Badger North standings at 1-5.
